WHEELDRIVE – Volkswagen is strengthening its push in electrification and digital innovation at Auto China 2026, underscoring its long-term commitment to China as the world’s largest and most dynamic automotive market. Amid rapid industry transformation, Volkswagen Group is using this momentum to accelerate growth, adapt to shifting consumer demands, and reinforce its leadership in electric vehicles (EV) and smart mobility solutions.
Through its “In China, for China” strategy, Volkswagen is introducing a range of next-generation technologies and vehicles tailored specifically for local consumers. This localization approach is central to the company’s competitiveness in China’s fast-evolving EV market, where innovation, connectivity, and intelligent driving features are becoming key purchase drivers.
“China is a key driver of our transformation and plays a crucial role in Volkswagen’s global ambitions,” said Oliver Blume. “The products and technologies we are presenting at Auto China 2026 clearly demonstrate the strength of our localization strategy and our commitment to innovation in electric mobility.”
As part of its largest product expansion in China, Volkswagen plans to launch more than 20 electrified vehicles in 2026 alone, including fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid models, and range-extender vehicles. By 2030, the company aims to offer up to 50 electrified models in China, reinforcing its position as a major player in the global EV market while meeting rising demand for sustainable mobility solutions.
Volkswagen is also accelerating its local research and development (R&D) capabilities in China to shorten innovation cycles and deliver advanced automotive technologies more efficiently. Through partnerships and in-house engineering, the company is now able to develop end-to-end solutions, including advanced driver assistance systems. One key milestone is the development of Level 2 Advanced ADAS through CARIZON, featuring technologies such as Highway Pilot, which enhances driving safety and convenience.
Future Volkswagen models in China will feature even more advanced intelligent driving systems, including Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) for both city and highway scenarios, as well as automated parking capabilities. These innovations highlight how Volkswagen integrates locally developed technologies into mass-production vehicles, strengthening its position in smart mobility and autonomous driving trends.
“The ‘In China, for China’ strategy is now becoming a reality on the road. Within just 36 months, we have developed a completely new portfolio of smart electric vehicles in China,” said Ralf Brandstätter. “This year alone, we will introduce 20 new models equipped with advanced technologies designed to meet the expectations of Chinese consumers.”

Among the highlights at Auto China 2026 are the ID. UNYX 09 and ID. AURA T6, two new electric vehicles that showcase Volkswagen’s innovation in EV design, performance, and digital experience. The ID. AURA T6, developed by FAW-Volkswagen, marks the debut of the new ID. AURA lineup in the highly competitive mid-size electric SUV segment. Built on the China Electronic Architecture (CEA), it supports advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems and over-the-air (OTA) software updates, enabling continuous feature enhancements over time.
Meanwhile, the ID. UNYX 09 from Volkswagen Anhui is a large electric sedan approximately five meters long, combining powerful computing capabilities, intelligent driving features, and an AI-based virtual assistant that delivers more natural and intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle. This model reflects Volkswagen’s focus on integrating artificial intelligence into everyday mobility.
Beyond electrification, Volkswagen is also advancing its vision for AI-powered vehicles through its “Agentic AI for All” roadmap. Starting in 2026, vehicles built on the latest CEA platform will feature AI agents capable of understanding context, anticipating user needs, and executing complex functions seamlessly. This marks a significant step toward fully connected, intelligent mobility ecosystems.
According to Oliver Blume, this initiative represents a major milestone in Volkswagen’s transformation journey. It supports the company’s ambition to regain leadership in China while positioning itself as a global automotive technology leader.
By showcasing its latest electric vehicles, advanced ADAS technologies, and AI-driven innovations at Auto China 2026, Volkswagen demonstrates how it is reshaping the future of mobility. The company’s strategy focuses on making technology more accessible, user-friendly, and deeply integrated into everyday driving experiences, ensuring it remains competitive in the rapidly evolving global automotive industry.
